As an alum of Northwestern College, Dr. Heeg strives to uphold the academic excellence that enabled her to thrive in her Ph.D. program. Trained in the area of molecular biology, she received her doctorate from Northwestern University. Dr. Heeg not only challenges her students in the classroom, but she provides them with many hands-on experiences off campus as well.
The recipient of Northwestern’s 2010 Teaching Excellence Award, Dr. Heeg provides her students with plenty of hands-on experience inside and out of the classroom. She has a gift for relating to students and offers them real-life applications in a collaborative environment.
One student said, “Her classes are conducted in a rigorous academic manner that is still friendly and engaging to the students. She is one of my favorite professors because of her willingness to treat students as colleagues in science, not subordinates.”
Dr. Heeg is an adviser for Northwestern’s Pre-Health Professions Club, through which students who aspire to pursue a career in the medical field can receive application guidance. The club also hosts events with practicing doctors, health professions students and admissions personnel to help students pursue their calling.
Dr. Heeg teaches a non-credit pre-MCAT course to help students prepare for the test using AptarePrep, software she and several other experts developed. It’s available free to NWC students when they are working with her. This software has gained national and international users. Given her expertise, Dr. Heeg has been an invited speaker to pre-medical students on behalf of several medical schools and undergraduate institutions across the United States.
