On-air personality

Jordan is combining his public relations major with a coaching endorsement. He serves as a feature, news and sports writer for the student newspaper and does play-by-play broadcasting for the Raiders basketball, baseball and softball teams. After college, he plans to pursue a career in broadcast journalism.

Both/and
I chose Northwestern because I could pursue two of my passions: football and broadcasting. Once I received my football scholarship, the coaches showed me how I could prepare for a broadcasting career through my major and through work-study positions with the athletic communications office and the student newspaper. I was also at a great spot in my faith journey, and I knew Northwestern would help me continue to grow in my relationship with God. All those factors made choosing Northwestern a no-brainer.

Focused and well-rounded
I appreciate the flexibility of the public relations major. PR students can make the major their own, which can set them up for success in multiple areas. Obviously, we need to take the required advertising and marketing classes, but we are still able to pursue topics we’re interested in, such as photography, graphic design, video production and web design. That allowed me to further enjoy my college experience and become a more well-rounded communicator.

Living his values
Some people outside the profession may think there’s no way to integrate faith and learning in public relations because they see it as companies “covering their tracks.” The best piece of advice I heard from my professor about that dilemma is to never do anything that contradicts my Christian faith. Public relations and marketing are all about promotion, and I need to make sure I promote ideas that go along with my Christian ethics and values.

Intern reporter
I had the opportunity to intern at KELOLAND Media Group in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. As a news and sports reporter, I was able to interview people who were passionate about what they do, and it was rewarding to be their voice. The tight deadlines got a little stressful at times, but seeing my story air on television at the end of the day made all the ups and downs of the day worth it.

Serving and leading
As a writing fellow in the Peer Learning Center, I work with First-Year Seminar students one-on-one to help them become stronger writers. I get to see students grow and become confident in their writing abilities, which is truly rewarding. I was also a group leader in my public relations practicum, which gave me experience in leading a group of people to success.

Calling a game
My favorite memories at NWC include the times I’ve been able to provide play-by-play for Raider athletic events. I love being around and talking about sports, and I get to do both whenever I call a game. It never feels like work for me. Just like my time at KELOLAND Media Group, I get to be a voice for coaches and players who are passionate about what they do. I’m forever grateful that I’m able to show my excitement for what they do as well.
