An education at the molecular level

A double major in genetics, molecular, and cellular biology and secondary education, Annika is not afraid of a challenge. She says her professors are ready to ask hard questions and listen to student perspectives, encouraging her passion for deep learning. Annika is involved in SEA-PHAGES research and plans to conduct her honors research in phage biology. Outside the lab, Annika serves as a student ambassador, discipleship group leader and First Year Seminar speech fellow.

Miracle of life
The intricacy of life, especially at the molecular level, never ceases to amaze me. Life is a miracle, and it is so thrilling to learn more about God through his creation. My research experiences at Northwestern have been particularly meaningful, providing opportunities to discover and name my own bacteriophage as well as research the function of genes within bacteriophage genomes. As someone who is thinking about going to grad school, this kind of research experience at the undergraduate level is incredible.

Faculty support for the journey
The Northwestern faculty are among the main reasons I love NWC so much. They want me to do my absolute best, and they are there to support me every step of the way. My professors make themselves available to meet one-on-one with me and to answer my questions. Each professor is passionate about what they teach and research, and that passion makes me even more excited to learn about my field.

Complete trust
Studying biology and genetics has really challenged my faith, especially how I view the Bible. At first, I was unsure whether Old Testament stories such as the creation story and the flood could be trusted as fact and history. However, the more I learn about molecular biology and genetics, the more I see that the Bible is true, inspired by God, inerrant and infallible. I can trust his Word completely, even as a scientist.

Smiling faces, lasting friendships
The community I experienced while visiting campus instantly made Northwestern feel like home. I’m not kidding when I say that every time I walk across campus, I say hi to pretty much every person I pass. There are so many opportunities to meet people in my own dorm and others. For instance, I love the dorm traditions that enable people from across campus to hang out, do fun stuff together and grow in relationships that last for years.
