Student directors to present one-acts

Northwestern College directing students will present six short plays Wednesday, Dec. 9, beginning at 6 p.m., in the Allen Theatre of the DeWitt Theatre Arts Center.

Community members are invited to attend the free event; start times are approximate.

The plays are produced as the student-directors’ final exam with minimal staging and peers as actors. The plays range from 15 to 30 minutes, and the casts from two to 10 actors.

The Beggar and the King by Winthrop Parkhurst will be directed by senior Brandon Assmann at 6 p.m. In the play, tables are turned when the poor confront the wealthy, causing a king to fear a beggar.

At 6:23, junior Sarah Fisher will direct Airmail to the Moon by Tom Birdseye. A children’s comedy, Airmail to the Moon is the story of Ora Mae Cotton’s search for her stolen tooth.

At 6:41, junior Rebecca Dix will direct Tower of Babel, scripted verbatim from the Genesis 11 story of towering aspirations and linguistic confusion.

Alice Gerstenberg’s He Said/She Said will take the stage at 6:59 under the direction of senior Molly Te Slaa. Set at a dinner party, the play includes revelations of relationship angst and affairs.

Junior Renee Ausborn will direct Roxanne’s Kiss at 7:23. Taken from Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, the scene explores the bittersweet humor of failing to notice the lover right under your nose.

Studs Terkel’s book Working is the source for a performance art piece about Roberta Victor, an American hooker, on stage at 7:59. Working will be directed by sophomore Andrew Stam.
