Summer theatre tour to begin

Beginning on June 22, Northwestern College’s touring theatre company, the Drama Ministries Ensemble (DME), will make an eight-week tour of 11 central U.S. states, performing “Goliath and Other Foes: Ancient Plays of Israel,” taken from the Old Testament.

The DME’s eighth annual summer tour includes performances in five venues in northwest Iowa:

·         Sunday, June 22, American Reformed Church, Hull, during 9:30 a.m. worship

·         Sunday, June 29, Windmill Park band shell, Orange City, at 6 p.m. (hosted by Trinity Reformed Church, Orange City)

·         Thursday, July 3, Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp Chapel, Okoboji, in the evening

·         Tuesday, July 8, Bethel Reformed Church, Sheldon, at 7 p.m.

·         Wednesday, July 9, First Reformed Church, Orange City, at 6:45 p.m.

All performances are free, and community members are invited.

“Goliath and Other Foes” emerged from ongoing collaboration between Northwestern theatre professor Jeff Barker, playwright and DME director, and Dr. Tom Boogaart, professor of Old Testament at Western Seminary, Holland, Mich.

Boogaart thinks some Old Testament texts are intended to be watched rather than read. Barker has been testing Boogaart’s theory by scripting Old Testament texts into dramas and musicals.

Northwestern’s Drama Ministries Ensemble has performed across the United States, including off-Broadway in New York and at the Crystal Cathedral. Visit www.nwciowa.edu/theatretour for more summer tour information.
