Psychology major wins award at social science conference

Griese presented “Epistemology and Religiosity as Predictors of Moral Reasoning.” Last year, Candace Gross received the award for best student paper.

Griese was one of 16 Northwestern students to present research at the conference. They were among several student presenters from five area private liberal arts colleges.

Kelsey Arvidson presented “What Shapes Marital Views? Examining Parental Divorce and Religiosity.” She is a senior psychology major from North Oaks, Minn.

Danny Eshcol spoke on “Eating Behavior: The Influence of the Physical and Social Environment on Food Acceptance, Expected Consumption, and Actual Consumption.” A senior psychology major, he is from North Liberty, Iowa.

Melissa Evans presented “Birth Order and Sibling Size as Predictors of Career Interest and Alcohol Use.” She is a senior psychology major from Oyens, Iowa.

Jillian Groeneveld, a senior psychology major from Parkersburg, Iowa, spoke on “Volunteerism Among College-Aged Students.”

Bethany Harms, a senior psychology major from Colman, S.D., presented “Effects of Social Facilitation on Persistence.”

Shateen Lichter, a senior psychology major from Adrian, Minn., presented “Contributing Factors Toward College Students’ Perceptions of Domestic Abuse.” She also collaborated with Amy Katsma and Rachel Posthuma on “A Closer Look at Parental Attachment, Religiosity and Experimentation.” Katsma is a junior psychology major from Boise, Idaho. Posthuma is a junior from Pella, Iowa, majoring in psychology.

Rachael Wittern presented “Religiosity and Career Aspirations of Female Undergraduates.” She is a senior majoring in psychology and sociology from Adel, Iowa.

Lenae Bonnema, Teryn De Haan and Amanda Maloney presented “Motivating Volunteers: Connecting Volunteer Motives With Volunteering Appeals.” Bonnema is a junior psychology major from Ireton, Iowa. De Haan is a junior psychology and Spanish major from Orange City. Maloney is a junior majoring in psychology from Hartley, Iowa.

Kelly Freese, Darci Van Dyke and Jordan Plummer presented “Serving the Deserving: Belief in a Just World and Attraction to Volunteering Opportunites.” Freese is a junior psychology major from Fort Dodge, Iowa. Van Dyke is a sophomore psychology major from Chandler, Minn. Plummer is a junior psychology major from Ankeny, Iowa.
