Duke religion professor to speak

Dr. Ellen Davis, professor of Bible and practical theology at Duke Divinity School, will visit Northwestern College Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 1 and 2, as part of the college’s Ronald Nelson Scholars and Artists in Residence Program.
Davis will speak in chapel both days of her visit and give a Monday evening address at 7:30 on “Care and Creation in Sudan.” Chapel is scheduled for 10:05 a.m. on Oct. 1 and 11:05 a.m. on Oct. 2. All three addresses will take place in Christ Chapel and are free and open to the public.
Davis will also visit several Northwestern religion classes to speak to students.
A member of Duke’s faculty since 2001, Davis specializes in the theological interpretation of the Old Testament, with particular concern for Christian preaching. She is currently writing a book that will provide an exegetical basis for ecological responsibility. A lay Episcopalian, she has been involved in Jewish-Christian dialogue for more than 30 years.
Davis previously taught at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, Yale Divinity School, and Virginia Theological Seminary. She is a graduate of the University of California–Berkeley, holds a Master of Divinity degree from Church Divinity School of the Pacific, and earned a doctorate from Yale University.
Davis is the author of six books—including Wondrous Depth: Old Testament Preaching—and the co-editor of The Art of Reading Scripture.
