Choir to present home concert

The concert will include a variety of the choir’s tour repertoire, including works by Czech and other European composers such as Brahms and Rachmaninoff. The students will also perform a large selection of American music, with pieces by Bernstein, Copland and Lauridsen alongside black gospel and folk songs like John the Revelator and Shenandoah.

As part of the concert, the 28-voice Heritage Singers chamber ensemble will perform two songs from West Side Story and other works.

In an effort to show all aspects of the tour, students will tell about a variety of their experiences in Eastern Europe.

The tour includes three full concerts in the Czech Republic. Touring under the auspices of Youth for Christ, the choir will also give a Sunday morning performance at the Salzburg Cathedral in Austria, perform and minister to residents of senior citizen’s homes, and interact with high school students. The Northwestern group will visit the Auschwitz concentration camp museum, view the scenery of the Alps, and see the sights of Prague and Salzburg.

The A cappella Choir and Heritage Singers are under the direction of Dr. Thomas Holm, associate professor of music. A member of the Northwestern faculty since 2000, he also directs the Sioux County Oratorio Chorus and is active as an adjudicator and clinician. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral music from the University of Illinois and Master of Music degrees from the University of Alberta and the University of Idaho.
