Svanoe recognized by association

Dr. Kimberly Utke Svanoe, professor of music emerita at Northwestern College, was recognized at the recent Iowa Music Educators Association (IMEA) conference in Ames.

Svanoe received an IMEA Tenure Award in recognition of 33 years of service as a music teacher in Iowa.

Svanoe also presented a paper, “Classical Masterworks for the Vocal Music Classroom,” at the conference. She suggested that more intentionally and effectively incorporating classical music examples in the education of young children would help them develop cultural literacy.

A member Northwestern’s faculty since 1976, Svanoe retired in May. She supervised vocal music student teachers; gave voice, violin and cello lessons; taught conducting, music methods and music survey courses; and conducted the A cappella Choir, Symphonette and Women’s Choir. A resident of Sioux Falls, she is now teaching music at Sioux Falls Christian School.

The recipient of a doctorate in choral conducting from the University of Iowa, Svanoe also earned a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music and a bachelor’s degree from Minot State University.
