Band to present home concert March 14

Northwestern College’s Symphonic Band will perform its touring concert in Christ Chapel on Saturday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will include traditional and modern selections by composers from the U.S. and abroad, including “Festive Overture” by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich and “Carnival” from “La Fiesta Mexicana,” composed by H. Owen Reed. “Introduction, Theme and Variations” by Gioachino Rossini will feature senior Josh Klope, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on clarinet.

The band will also perform “Shortcut Home” by Dana Wilson, “Wild Nights!” by Frank Ticheli, based on Emily Dickinson’s poem of the same title about sailors coming into port, and other pieces, including several sacred selections.

The 42-member ensemble is directed by Dr. Tim McGarvey, professor of music at Northwestern. The ensemble has performed across the U.S. and internationally, including in Cuba in 2013. They are performing 10 concerts on tour from Iowa to the Gulf Coast during spring break Feb. 28 through March 9.
