Psychology majors present research

Thirteen Northwestern College psychology majors gave presentations at the Siouxland Social Science Research Conference, hosted by Mount Marty College, Yankton, S.D., on April 26. They were among several student presenters from area private liberal arts colleges.

Kelli Brands’ presentation, “The Effects of Religiosity and Forgiveness on Attributions About Poverty,” won the Outstanding Paper Award. She is a senior from Sioux Falls, S.D.

Chris Butler, a junior from Victorville, Calif., spoke on “Sleep Deprivation and Academic Success.”

Taylor Culver and Dana Franken collaborated on “The Impact of IMPACT,” a study of youth clubs in Romania, where they spent their fall semester. Culver is a junior from Sioux City, Iowa; Franken is a Sioux Center, Iowa, senior.

Laura De Jong, a senior from Hull, Iowa, presented “Self-esteem and Religiosity in Relation to College Students' Participation in Extra-curricular Activities.”

Kayla Kleinjan, a senior from Avon, Minn., gave a presentation on “The Influence of Affect and Leadership on Task Performance.”

Valerie Kleinjan spoke on “Extraversion and the Effect of Perceiving False vs. Real Smiles.” She is a senior from Bruce, S.D.

Nic Leither, a senior from Atwater, Minn., presented “Religious Tolerance and Perceived Religious Tolerance.”

Mariah Tappe spoke on “Does the Self Come in Different Shades of Lipstick? A Study of Media Images on Women's Self-esteem and Self-satisfaction.” She is a senior from New Richland, Minn.

Elizabeth Thompson, a senior from Eagle Grove, Iowa, gave a presentation entitled “Religious Experiences, Openness and Religious Orientation.”

Chad Van Ravenswaay, a Sioux Center senior, presented “Facial Emotion Detection and Lie Detection.”

Morgan Weis delivered a presentation on “Outcomes of Anonymous Self-Disclosure: Measuring the Post-Secret Method.” She is a senior from Champlin, Minn.

Kelsey White, a senior from Soldotna, Alaska, spoke on “The Effect of Group Size on Cooperation.”
