New art professor to display work

Northwestern College’s newest art professor, Emily Stokes, will display her work in the Te Paske Gallery Aug. 23 through Sept. 16. A public reception with the artist is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m.

The exhibit, entitled “Emily Stokes: Recent Works,” includes images that reflect Stokes’ upbringing and interest in vernacular culture. Her art is created from a combination of traditional printmaking processes—including lithography, intaglio and screen-print—as well as drawing.

Stokes joined Northwestern’s art department faculty this fall after teaching at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio. She has also served as an instructor for the Ann Arbor Art Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., and for the Summer Discovery Pre-College Enrichment Program at the University of Michigan.

Stokes holds a bachelor’s degree in studio art and English from Wellesley College and a Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from Arizona State University. She has had solo exhibitions at Arizona State, the University of Michigan Hospital, and Mallett’s Creek Library in Ann Arbor. Her work has also been part of group exhibitions at galleries and art centers in 16 states. Awards include an artist summer residency at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa., and “Best of Show” at the Mid American Print Council’s juried show in 2008.

The Te Paske Gallery is located in the Thea G. Korver Visual Arts Center, on Highway 10 at 214 8th Street SW in Orange City. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to midnight Sunday.
