THE EXHIBITION

Regional artists (from within a 300-mile radius of Orange City, IA) are invited to submit work to the juried exhibition, “Flora of Our Place: Interpretations.” As part of Orange City’s annual Summer Suites—an outdoor event featuring entertainment, art and food—the exhibition seeks artists’ works that interpret our natural world. Jurors will select the works that best display both facility and conceptual cohesiveness as applied to the exhibition's theme.

The one-day exhibit will be held in the Te Paske Gallery in  Northwestern College's Korver Visual Arts Center, Orange City IA.

SUMMER SUITES

The exhibit, "Flora of our Place: Interpretations," will be held in conjunction with the Orange City Arts Council's Summer Suites, an annual celebration of flowering gardens. The "progressive concert" features music, theatre, and – this year – visual art ... plus always irresistible sweets. When purchasing tickets, audience members are placed into one of three groups, and this year will visit two backyard gardens in addition to the Te Paske Gallery. At each location, the 30-minute program is repeated three times. This year's Summer Suites is Monday, July 25, from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m., with audience members invited to return to the gallery afterwards.

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA

This exhibit is open to any artist 18 years of age or older within a 300-mile radius of Orange City, Iowa. Artwork must be original in concept, composition and execution. Artwork may not have been shown previously in an Orange City Arts Council exhibit. No photography entries, please. Other 2-D and 3-D media will be considered, and must be ready to hang/present. (Sawtooth hangers are not allowed.)

INSURANCE

The Orange City Arts Council and Northwestern College art department will exercise all reasonable care in handling and hanging the art, and do have limited insurance coverage. However, the Orange City Arts Council and Northwestern College assume no responsibility for damage or loss to works submitted. Insurance is the responsibility of the exhibiting artist.

AGREEMENT

Works accepted for exhibition may not be withdrawn prior to the close of the show.

The Orange City Arts Council reserves the right to install the works in any manner deemed necessary for exhibition or security purposes.

SALES & REPRODUCTION

The Orange City Arts Council will finalize any sales of exhibited artwork at a price that is set by the artist. Sales are subject to a 20% commission, so prices should be set accordingly. Works not for sale must be clearly marked "NFS."

The submission of entries presupposes that the right is granted to photograph accepted works for education and publicity purposes. Otherwise, taking photos of the artwork in the gallery is prohibited.

ENTRY PROCEDURES

Entrants are limited to three entries. Sets, e.g., diptych, may be classified as one entry.

There is no entry fee.

We request digital images only. Submissions for jurying must be quality jpg images – 200 dpi and no larger than 2 MB.

The image must be a true representation of the work submitted. The Orange City Arts Council reserves the right to reject work accepted which does not conform to the quality represented by the submission.

With each submission, also include artist's name, address, e-mail, phone number, title of work, medium, size and date of production.

NOTIFICATION

Artists will be notified of acceptance by e-mail by July 13, 2011. Approximately 20 works of art will be accepted, from 20 different artists.

COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS, JURORS' CHOICES

All artists accepted for exhibition will be given two complimentary tickets to Summer Suites.

Jurors will select the "best of show" and "honorable mention." Audience members will select the "people's choice."

TIMELINE

Thursday, June 30, 2011: Deadline for submission. All entries must be received via e-mail.

Wednesday, July 13: Acceptance notification emailed to artists.

Saturday, July 23. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Art must be hand-delivered to Korver Visual Arts Center, Northwestern College, Orange City. Or prior arrangements may be made to ship or hand-deliver art to  arrive by noon on July 22 to Orange City Arts Council, 125 Central Ave. SE, Orange City IA 51041.

Monday, July 25. Exhibition & Summer Suites.

          6:30 p.m.: Exhibit opens at Te Paske Gallery, Korver Visual Arts Center in conjunction with Orange City Arts Council's Summer Suites.

          6:30-8:45 p.m.: Summer Suites. Three groups of audience members visit the gallery and the other two Summer Suites locations. At Te Paske Gallery, a juror will speak briefly at each 35-minute session, audience members will vote for "people's choice," background music will be provided & refreshments will be served. Fifteen minutes will be allowed between sessions for travel between the three Summer Suites locations.

          8:45-9:30 p.m.: Artists and audience members are invited to return to Te Paske Gallery for the announcement of the "people's choice" award at 9 p.m.

          9:30 p.m.: Artists must pick up their artwork, unless prior arrangement is made.

JURORS

Jurors will be Joan Brower, art teacher at MOC-Floyd Valley Elementary School in Hospers; Matt Drissell, instructor of art at Dordt College; and Rein Vanderhill, professor of art at Northwestern College.

NOTE

Ticket prices through July 21 are adults: $7.50, students: $5, families: $22. From July 22-25, ticket prices are adults: $10, students: $7 and families: $30.
