Symphonic Band to perform April 23
Wednesday, April 7, 2010
Directed by Dr. Timothy McGarvey, the 57-member Northwestern band will perform four pieces, including George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, in which Dr. Juyeon Kang, associate professor of music, will perform as piano soloist. Also included on the program will be Frank Ticheli’s arrangement of Amazing Grace and Wedding Dance by Jacques Press. The band will close with British composer Adam Gorb’s Awayday, which expresses the exhilaration of traveling at 100 miles per hour in an open-top sports car on a festive holiday.
“I am looking forward to a great concert of some incredible music,” says McGarvey. “Performing Rhapsody in Blue with Dr. Kang is a privilege and will be a great experience for the students.”
Senior Pete Boscaljon says he is also looking forward to performing. “Rhapsody in Blue is one of my favorite pieces of music, and performing such an incredible composition is going to be a great way to end my time as a member of the Symphonic Band.”
The MOC-Floyd Valley Symphonic Band, under the direction of Steve Connell, will be sharing this special concert with the Northwestern band. The high school ensemble will perform four pieces, including Timothy Mahr’s Hymn and Celebration, John Philip Sousa’s The Corcoran Cadets March and A Copland Portrait,” adapted by Clare Grundman.
