NWC to pin first nursing graduates

Northwestern College’s first Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates will participate in a pinning ceremony Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. in Christ Chapel. Joining the eight seniors will be 21 sophomores who will formalize their commitment to practice Christ-centered nursing. Community members are invited to the event.

The underclassmen will receive nursing lamps and certificates of commitment, indicating they intend to practice Christian nursing as defined by “The Code of Christian Nursing Ethics,” written by Dr. Ruth Daumer, the department’s chairperson. The code is based on the nursing program’s philosophy of nursing as a healing ministry. Students will also receive Bibles from the Gideons.

Guest speaker for the event is Nikolyn Kredit, a nurse clinician with Orange City’s Community Health Partners and a parish nurse.

Kredit is among several area clinicians who have mentored Northwestern nursing students and will be honored for their contributions to students’ learning. Others who will be recognized are Marsha Flewelling and Sandy Van Batavia, Orange City Area Health System; Jayme Messerole, Mental Health Institute; Laurie Vander Weide, Sioux Center Community Hospital; and Sue White, Mercy Medical Center.

Northwestern’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program received full approval from the Iowa Board of Nursing in 2006. It is one of only three programs in western Iowa to offer a four-year B.S.N. degree.
