Four 2007 Northwestern College graduates received Faculty Honors at commencement ceremonies on May 12. Robbie Cundy, Emily Fischer, Jason Helmus and Ryan Pendell were recognized.
The Faculty Honors award is bestowed upon graduates who excel in academic achievement, Christian influence, general attitude and participation in worthwhile campus activities. The highest honor the faculty gives to graduating seniors, it is determined by a vote of the entire faculty. Twenty-six students were nominated.
Cundy, a mathematics major from Madison, S.D., graduated Summa Cum Laude. A member of the Sigma Tau senior honor society, Cundy was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges for 2006. He received Northwestern’s Outstanding Calculus Student Award as a freshman and served as a tutor, resident assistant and Spring Service Project participant. Cundy lettered in track all four years at Northwestern, attaining All-American status at the NAIA national indoor meet this year by finishing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles.
Fischer is a Summa Cum Laude graduate from Arlington, S.D. , who majored in Christian education. A recipient of Northwestern’s prestigious Norman Vincent Peale Scholarship and a member of the Sigma Tau honor society, she was selected for Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 2006. A year earlier, she was named an undergraduate fellow by the Fund for Theological Education and attended that organization’s Summer Conference on Excellence in Ministry. A member of Northwestern’s volleyball team as a freshman, Fischer participated in Spring Service Projects, was a member of the Campus Ministry Team, and provided tutoring services.
Helmus, a biology health professions major from Rock Valley, Iowa, graduated Summa Cum Laude. A Peale Scholarship recipient and a member of the Sigma Tau honor society, he is an Honors Program graduate. Helmus earned the Undergraduate Award for Achievement in Organic Chemistry as a sophomore and the General Chemistry Achievement Award as a freshman. A Who’s Who honoree in 2006, he has been a tutor and a Spring Service Project participant. Last year, he presented a paper at the annual meeting of the Midwest American Society of Animal Science based on his research with Northwestern professor Dr. Abe Scheaffer.
Pendell is a Magna Cum Laude graduate from Elkhorn, Neb., with a major in philosophy. An Honors Program graduate and recipient of a Norman Vincent Peale Scholarship, he participated in Junior Scholar research in English as a junior. Pendell, who was chosen for Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 2006, also was a tutor and a member of the Campus Ministry Team.
