Sixteen Northwestern College students presented the results of their research at the Siouxland Undergraduate Social Science Research Conference, hosted by Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, recently. They were among several student presenters from five area private liberal arts colleges.
Candace Gross, a senior psychology major from Parker, S.D., received the award for best student paper. She presented “Epistemology, Self-Concept and Need for Achievement as Predictors of Academic Achievement and Honors Participation.”
Amanda Brouwer, a senior psychology major from Orange City, presented a paper entitled “Pricking and Poking: Predictors of Self-Care Behaviors in Diabetes.”
Angela Brugman, Rachel Posthuma and Kari Squires presented “Attachment With Faith Intimacy and Spiritual Maturity in Female Friendships.” Brugman is a senior psychology major from Alta, Iowa. Posthuma is a sophomore psychology major from Pella, Iowa. Squires is a sophomore psychology major from Urbandale, Iowa.
Melanie De Boer, a psychology major from Orange City, spoke on “Emotional Intelligence, Spiritual Maturity and Intimacy in College Female Friendships.”
Shateen Gens, Bethany Harms and Melissa McNeil presented “Friends Who Pray Together Stay Together? A Study of Friendship Intimacy and Spirituality Among Females.” Gens is a junior psychology major from Truman, Minn. Harms is a junior psychology major from Colman, S.D. McNeil is a senior sociology major from Eagan, Minn.
Aaron Haverdink, a senior psychology major from Orange City, presented “Volunteerism, Mattering, Empathy and Family History of Volunteering.”
Terri Johnson, a sophomore psychology major from Sibley, Iowa, gave a poster presentation entitled “Don’t Be Shy, Give Friendship a Try: Relating Shyness, Social Efficacy and Emotional Intelligence in Female Friendships.”
Lisa Matthews, an Orange City senior with a major in psychology, presented a paper entitled “Sense of Belonging, Cultural Understanding, Academic Success and Self-Efficacy.”
Angela Meendering, a senior psychology major from Orange City, presented “Job Satisfaction: The Relationship Among Self-Esteem, Locus of Control, and Other Variables in Northwestern College Faculty.”
Iver Mettler, a senior psychology major from Ridgeway, Iowa, spoke on “Effects of Positive Performance Feedback on Attributional Style.”
Julia Meyer, a senior psychology major from Aplington, Iowa, presented “Student Perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.”
Amy Vander Holt, a senior psychology major from Parkersburg, Iowa, presented “The Effects of Cross-Cultural Experiences on Emotional Intelligence, Spirituality, Epistemology, Empathy, Optimism and Vocational Thought.”
