An M.Ed. program that fits

Melissa Boer had been a teacher for more than a decade when she decided to return to school for a special education endorsement. Just as excellent a student as she is a teacher, now Melissa is earning her M.Ed. in early childhood, entirely online at Northwestern.

I remember when I was in high school, I spent a semester helping out in a local classroom working with second graders. And that's when I knew that no matter what it took, I was going to be a teacher. Seeing their eyes light up, it was so real! So inspiring! I've been a teacher for 12 years now and that feeling has only gotten stronger. Going back to school and developing my skills so I could be a better teacher — it just made sense.

So I decided to enroll in the master's program in early childhood education at Northwestern College. I can't even describe how powerful this experience has been. I'm able to complete my courses entirely online whenever it works best for me. Everyone at Northwestern is so supportive! They really do care about me and my goals and I can apply the things I'm learning in my classroom the very next day. Education is constantly changing; I think you have to be willing to adapt to be the best teacher you can be because that's what the students deserve. I'm a parent too and that's what I want for my kids. It has to be about the students… always.
