Westerholm accepted for selective scholars' program

Wednesday, April 20, 2005

Dr. Joel Westerholm, professor of English at Northwestern College, has been accepted for a selective NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) summer seminar: Religious Experience and English Poetry, 1633-1985.

The 17-person seminar will be held at the University of Notre Dame June 20 through July 22. The participants, all college and university professors, will be taught by Dr. Kevin Hart, award-winning poet and renowned poetry scholar.

Hart will lead seminar participants in discussions of the poetry of George Herbert, Gerard Manley Hopkins, T.S. Elliot and Geoffrey Hill and the philosophy of Hans Urs von Balthasar, Jean-Luc Marion and Jean-Louis Chrétien. Participants will study how religious poetry might be seen in a new light through contemporary philosophy of religion and theology.

Westerholm hopes the seminar will enable him to expand the book he’s currently writing on poetry and Christianity. It will also inform his teaching and give him new material for his course on poetry and prayer. This will be Westerholm’s third NEH summer program.

Westerholm earned a doctorate from the University of Connecticut. He teaches courses in 19th- and 20th-century English literature, interpretation theory, and contemporary world literature.
