Edman chairs APA Continuing Education Committee

Dr. Sally Oakes Edman, director of Northwestern College’s Wellness Center, is serving as the 2008 chairperson of the Continuing Education Committee of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Edman and fellow committee members oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of continuing education programs and products offered by the APA to licensed psychologists throughout the country. The committee also reviews and approves applications from organizations seeking to provide continuing education, and monitors such programs.

Licensed psychologists, required in most states to obtain a minimum of 40 hours of continuing education every two years, can choose from a wide range of options, including independent study programs, workshops offered at the APA convention, and special programs.

Edman oversees Northwestern’s counseling and health services. Before joining the Northwestern staff in 2003, she served as a clinical psychologist at a family practice medical clinic in Decorah, Iowa; director of counseling at Waldorf College; and psychotherapist in a private practice in Forest City, Iowa. She also taught psychology at Luther and Waldorf colleges.

Licensed as a clinical psychologist and independent health service provider in psychology, Edman earned doctoral and master’s degrees in counseling psychology at the University of Notre Dame. She completed her undergraduate studies at Luther College.
