Remmerde's free-throw record ends at 133

Thursday, February 9, 2006

Deb Remmerde's (Rock Valley, Iowa) record-breaking streak of consecutive made free throws ended at 133 during a 95-66 win at Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, S.D., on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Remmerde hit her first six shots from the line before the miss that prompted a standing ovation for her achievement. She finished eight of nine from the charity stripe, pouring in 40 points, including eight three-pointers.

Not only does she own the NAIA record (Div. I and II), the sophomore guard also shattered the NCAA (all divisions) record of 69 set by Jamie Visness of Concordia-Moorhead in 2002-03.  Remmerde’s record doesn’t stop there; she has also eclipsed the men’s NCAA (all divisions) mark held by Div. II player Paul Cluxton of Northern Kentucky (1997), who made 94 straight.

She also surpassed consecutive free throw records at other levels, include the boys' high school mark of 126 held by Daryl Moreau of New Orleans De La Salle in 1978-79, and the NBA record of 97 set by the Minnesota Timberwolves' Micheal Williams in 1993.

Before the Dakota Wesleyan game, Remmerde had missed only two free throws this season, both of which came in Northwestern’s first game of the year against MidAmerica Nazarene University. In a game against William Penn College on Nov. 26, 2005, she broke the NAIA record of 53 she set last year.

Remmerde, the only freshman to earn NAIA Div. II first team All-American honors in 2005, is second nationally in points per game with a 29.83 average. The all-time leading scorer in Iowa high school basketball and the state's 2003 Miss Basketball is second nationally in three-point field goal percentage, .503, and fourth in three-point field goals made, 3.22 per game. Named a Kodak All-American last season, she was also the Great Plains Athletic Conference freshman of the year.
