The son of missionaries, Stafford grew up in an Ivory Coast village, watched over by his wise and loving African “extended family.” He began working with Compassion International in 1977, first serving in Haiti, and eventually served as president and CEO of the organization for 20 years. Stafford is the author of Just a Minute: In the Heart of a Child, One Moment Can Last Forever and Too Small to Ignore: Why the Least of These Matters the Most.

Iowa’s newest Teacher of the Year, Shelly Vroegh, teaches fifth grade at Lakewood Elementary in Norwalk, Iowa. She’s also a lead mentor for the Norwalk Community School District, the elementary math curriculum leader, an instruction coach and helps coordinate a summer school program. At the award ceremony, Governor Terry Branstad praised Vroegh for being an example of how "great teachers really do change lives." Branstad noted Vroegh's strengths in her classroom and as a teacher leader in her district and explained that educators like her are contributing to the success of Iowa's new teacher leadership and compensation system. Vroegh taught third grade for 18 years before moving to fifth grade two years ago.

Teacher Leadership credit options

Educators attending the 2017 Northwestern Leadership Series conference may earn one graduate credit or one license renewal credit through Northwestern College.
Teacher Track Sessions denotes a Teacher Leadership session focus, but you can attend any session.
(You’re also welcome to attend the conference as a non-credit-seeking participant.)

Graduate credit requirements (45 contact hours) | $150

  • Register for the conference, choosing the graduate credit requirement option.
  • Attend a full schedule of sessions on June 8 and 9 (sessions do not have to be in the Teacher Leadership track).
  • Complete NWC online course “Teacher Leader” between June 12 and 30. The course, offered via Blackboard digital learning software, includes readings, videos, participation in an online discussion forum, and submission of a two-page report summarizing how you will apply conference information to your professional role.

License renewal credit requirements (15 contact hours) | $95

  • Register for the conference, choosing the license renewal credit option.
  • Attend a full schedule of sessions on June 8 and 9 (sessions do not have to be in the Teacher Leadership track).

The Leadership Series is hosted on the campus of Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Lodging is separate from the conference registration and fee and is available at Orange City’s Hampton Inn and the Holiday Inn Express in Sioux Center.
