"Coach Ox" combines his passion for athletic performance training and college students by serving as program director for Northwestern's strength + conditioning major while also developing and overseeing the strength + conditioning programs for the baseball and volleyball teams.

Hospitable

Not every performance coach can be described as being “hospitable,” but a colleague of Coach Ox used that term when nominating him for the 2024 Faculty Inspirational Service Award. “Stepping into his weight room is like stepping into your grandmother’s house (even though you’re there to get your butt worked off). He genuinely cares about the well-being of his athletes.” Another colleague said, “He takes the time to listen to his students and ensures they are seen, heard and loved.”

World traveler

Since he studied in China as a Northwestern student, Professor Ochsner has enjoyed learning about different cultures through global travel. He twice led summer study abroad trips to the Czech Republic, with a focus on physical education, sports and active leisure. Specifically, students investigated how physical culture shapes and reinforces the values and beliefs within Czech culture.

Conference leader

Northwestern students and athletic performance coaches participate in the NWC Performance Clinic Ochsner coordinates each spring. One of the highlights for him is the annual meal provided for guest speakers and alumni. “It’s like a strength + conditioning homecoming,” he says. “I love our alumni.”

Active

A former powerlifter, Ox now focuses on good, steady cardio and circuit training for his personal exercise routine. He walks and bikes to work and enjoys splitting wood by hand with an ax.

Coffee geek

Professor Ochsner is a coffee connoisseur with a pour-over set in his office. He enjoys investigating the nuances of certain beans and savoring community with students and faculty while sipping a cup.
