NWC Jazz Band and Heritage Singers to present joint concert

The Northwestern College Heritage Singers and Jazz Band will perform a joint concert Saturday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

Directed by Dr. Thomas Holm, professor of music and department chair, the Heritage Singers will perform Johannes Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Waltzer (Lovesong Waltzes),” accompanied on piano by sophomore Bethany Dykstra and junior Leigh Carson. “The texts for these brief ‘waltzes’ talk about the many sides of love,” says Holm. “The content and mood ranges from delight and anger to jealousy, loneliness and desire, often tongue-in-cheek.”

The singers will also perform J.S. Bach’s “Little Fugue in G Minor,” arranged by Ward Swingle. “This piece presents its main melody in the soprano section and then moves through broken fragments throughout the work, finally ending with a complete melody in the bass section,” says Holm. “This work is always an audience favorite.”

The Jazz Band, directed by Dr. Tim McGarvey, professor of music, will perform pieces of various jazz styles, including Les Sabina’s “Imminent Impact,” Duke Ellington’s “Flirtibird” and Michel Legrand’s “The Windmills of Your Mind,” arranged by Eric Richards.

Mike Tomaro’s “Saturday Morning Blues” will also be performed during the concert, as well as John Green’s “Body and Soul,” arranged by Matt Harris; “Take Five” by Paul Desmond, arranged by Dave Wolpe; and Mary Lou Williams’ “Roll ‘Em.”
