Encouraged to thrive

Ashley originally planned to move to Arizona after high school, but a teacher encouraged her to check out the Northwestern NEXT program. As a student at NWC, Ashley has enjoyed participating in theatre productions, cheerleading and campus jobs. With goals to become a criminal investigator or a barista, Ashley has grown in many ways during her time at NWC.

Next steps

My teacher guided me to Northwestern College because she knew people here and trusted them. She thought this would be the best next step before moving out on my own. I have definitely become more confident and independent at NWC, and my faith has deepened. I am a better advocate for myself and am better able to handle situations.

Supportive mentors

The NEXT program team is really supportive and knows how to be patient and listen to us. If we ever have an issue, we know we can go to them. I can come to Sherry with anything and I know she will always help me.

Active on campus

I’m a bit of a comedian and bring people together with my humor. Last year, I was involved in lights and projection for “The Perfect Dog” children’s show and performed in the finale of RUSH, a student dance concert. I am also a football cheerleader and work as a barista at Common Grounds.
