"Princess Amanda" on stage at Northwestern

“Princess Amanda and the Dragon,” an allegorical play suitable for the whole family, will be presented by Northwestern College theatre Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. The one-hour production will be performed in the Allen Theatre.

The cast is also presenting “Princess Amanda and the Dragon” to schoolchildren every Tuesday and Thursday from Oct. 1 to Nov. 17.

Northwestern theatre graduate Hannah Barker Nickolay adapted the play from the book “Tales of the Kingdom” by David and Karen Mains. “Princess Amanda and the Dragon” features the same setting, Great Park, and some of the same characters from last year’s Northwestern theatre production of “Tales of the Kingdom,” but audience members who missed last year’s show can still fully enjoy “Princess Amanda,” says the show’s director, Karen Bohm Barker.

Princess Amanda—played by junior Logan Wright, Council Bluffs, Iowa—tries to keep something that cannot be caged, unleashing devastation on Great Park and testing the strength and resilience of Hero, who will be played by senior Kyle Ten Hulzen, Firth, Neb.

Audiences will enjoy the forest look and sounds of Great Park, says Barker of the play’s staging, which includes a great dragon, animated by nine actors, and simulated fire.

Tickets for “Princess Amanda and the Dragon” are $8 for adults and $4 for students. The shows take place during Northwestern College’s Raider Days Homecoming celebration and are free for alumni and their family members. Tickets are available starting Sept. 21 for Theatre Patrons and Sept. 22 through Oct. 3 for the general public.

Tickets can be reserved at www.nwciowa.edu/tickets or by visiting the DeWitt Theatre box office between 5 and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday or between 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday. The box office can also be reached by phone, 712-707-7098, or e-mail, boxoffice@nwciowa.edu.
