Northwestern College to present musical as children’s show

Northwestern College’s theatre department will present the children’s show, “Squirrelock Holmes: The Musical,” in the DeWitt Theatre Arts Center’s Allen Black Box Theatre on Oct. 2, 3, 9 and 10. Friday evening performances begin at 7 p.m., and Saturday afternoon shows start at 4.

Craig Holland’s “Squirrelock Holmes” tells the story of an absent-minded detective and her always-careful sibling on a quest to find the sunflower seeds missing from a favorite bird feeder. Young audiences will delight in Squirrelock and Wantsome’s interviews with creatures from crows to garden gnomes on their pun-filled pursuit to solve this backyard mystery.

“I chose this musical because the setting, characters and story feel like a warm hug,” says Marissa Leraas, director of “Squirrelock Holmes” and costume studio manager at Northwestern. “I also love that it includes facts about wildlife for children to learn more about God’s creation. The show will leave kids singing and dancing for weeks to come!”

In addition to the four public performances, the cast of 15 will perform weekday matinees throughout October and November for local schoolchildren and homeschooled students. Approximately 3,000 area students are expected to attend.
