Choral groups to perform April 24
Wednesday, April 7, 2010
The SCOC will perform Faure’s Requiem and will be joined by the A cappella Choir for Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. The A cappella Choir is made up of 64 students and is directed by Dr. Thomas Holm, professor of music.
“We chose these two works because they provide a great contrast for the listener. The Faure piece is a work of exquisite beauty, subtle colors and beautiful melody,” says Holm. “The Bernstein is wild, dramatic, in your face with textual expression. Both are works of the highest quality.”
“It has been interesting to learn this piece,” junior Jennifer Nilson says of the Bernstein work, “and it will be a really good opportunity to get to perform with the SCOC.”
The SCOC, also directed by Holm, annually rehearses and performs choral orchestral literature. Recent performances have included Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem and Haydn’s Paukenmesse. Soloists include Shannon Salyards, soprano, and Marty Barclay, baritone. Chichester Psalms will feature a boy soprano, Brendan Foughty from Orange City.
The 10-member Siouxland Boys Choir will perform Handel’s Where’er You Walk; Kyrie Eleison, arranged by George Strid; and Cantate Deo from Handel’s “Water Music Suite.” The ensemble is directed by Kimberly Miller of Hospers.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for students in advance; $9 and $5, respectively, at the door. Tickets may be purchased at The Dove or the NWC music department in Orange City and at the True Vine and Dordt College music department in Sioux Center.
