Rawlins Piano Trio to present recital

The Rawlins Piano Trio is a group of performers who are on the music faculty of the University of South Dakota. Violinist Eunho Kim, cellist Marie-Elaine Gagnon and pianist Susan Keith Gray tour regularly throughout the United States and abroad, most recently in Taiwan and Panama. The group has recorded four CDs with Albany Records, including American Discoveries, released in 2009.

The concert will feature a commissioned composition, Opposites Attract, by James Lentini, in which contrasting sources serve as the framework for the work’s musical ideas and styles. The piece consists of three movements, the first entitled Alpha Meets Omega. Composer Lentini serves as dean of the School of Fine Arts at Miami University in Ohio. The concert will also feature Claude Debussy’s Trio in G and Johannes Brahms’ Trio in B Major, Opus 8.

Kim earned a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from the Seoul National University and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. She serves as concertmaster of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra.

Gagnon has a master’s degree from Florida International University and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Miami. Winner of numerous music competitions in Canada, Gagnon previously taught at the Université de Montréal and at Barry University in Miami.

Gray holds degrees in piano performance from Converse College and the University of Illinois and a Doctor of Musical Arts in chamber music and accompanying from the University of Michigan. Gray has toured in South America and the West Indies.
