NWC to host Fall Family Weekend Oct. 30-31

Northwestern College will host its Fall Family Weekend Oct. 30-31, giving family members of students a chance to see campus and get a glimpse into their student’s life.

Friday’s activities will include Northwestern’s selection round of NC/DC at 9:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. NC/DC is a campus version of “American Idol” that pits the best singers from Northwestern against those from Dordt College. Top performers will be chosen to represent Northwestern. Admission is free.

Saturday will begin with a breakfast served at the Hub in the Rowenhorst Student Center from 8 to 10 a.m. Waffles, scrambled eggs, hash browns and bacon will be served. The cost is $5, with children ages five and under eating free. The breakfast is sponsored by the Northwestern Auxiliary and gives families the opportunity to meet President Greg Christy.

Another event sponsored by the Auxiliary will be a silent auction in the Rowenhorst Student Center from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Theme baskets, gift certificates, crafts and baked goods will be available for purchase. Proceeds will go to the Auxiliary’s pledge to the new learning commons.

Residence halls will be open to guests from 11 a.m. Saturday until 1 in the morning. Lunch will be served in the cafeteria from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $6.75 for adults and $3.50 for children ages 6-10, with children ages five and under eating free.

There will be a Red Raider football game versus Sioux Falls at 1 p.m. in De Valois Stadium. At halftime, Northwestern’s Parents of the Year, Larry and Donna Hardersen of Hinton, Iowa, will be introduced. The Hardersens were nominated by their daughter, senior Delainye Woudstra. The Hardersens have had four other children graduate from Northwestern: Kelana Groendyke ’99, Kendara Woudstra ’03, Mikyla Dittman ’05 and Kadrian ’08.

Northwestern’s women’s basketball team will hold a junior varsity intra-squad scrimmage at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity’s matchup with the alumni at 4:30 p.m. in the Bultman Center. Admission is free.

Black V, Northwestern’s student-run improv theatre team, will present shows at 4:30 and 9:30 p.m. in the England Proscenium Theatre. Admission is free.

An evening buffet will be available in the cafeteria from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $9 for adults and $4.50 for children ages 6-10, with children ages five and under eating free.

The Fall Family Weekend Concert will be held in Christ Chapel at 7 p.m., featuring several of the music department’s performing ensembles, including the Symphonic Band, Chamber Orchestra and choirs. Admission is free.

The weekend will wrap up with Northwestern’s volleyball team hitting the court against Dordt College Saturday at 7:30. The match will be held at Dordt in Sioux Center.
