Exhibit to feature work by Arizona artist

Drawings by Greg Schoon, a Tucson, Ariz., artist, will be on display Sept. 18 through Oct. 6 in Northwestern College’s Te Paske Gallery. A public reception is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m.

Entitled “meditation for poot,” Schoon’s exhibit is a tribute to fellow artist and friend Poot Christiano, who died in May of ovarian cancer. Schoon’s art—created while working through the grieving process after losing his friend—speak to the suffering that is the nature of life. The result is highly expressive abstract drawings done in mixed media.

Schoon graduated from Northwestern College in 1975 with a degree in art, then did graduate studies in printmaking and painting at the University of Tulsa, the University of Arizona and Arkansas State University. Raised on a farm in Iowa, he moved to the Arizona desert 30 years ago and has been producing art full time since 1991, receiving both private and public commissions.

Schoon’s art ranges across styles and mediums. He works in mixed media on canvas and paper, cast ceramic and concrete, glass mosaic, leaded and stained glass panels, wood and metal constructions, and sculpture. He is currently working on large sculptural walls and plaza mosaics for two public parks, along with design and fabrication of six stained glass windows for a synagogue in Tucson.

The Te Paske Gallery is located in Northwestern’s Korver Visual Arts Center on Highway 10 at 214 8th Street SW in Orange City. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to midnight Sunday.
