Northwestern to host singing competition

Northwestern College will host a vocal competition involving over 90 singers on Saturday, April 25. Singers ranging in age from high school to adult will participate in the Lewis and Clark Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing student auditions.

College singers will compete from Northwestern, Briar Cliff, Buena Vista, Dordt, Morningside, the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Western Iowa Tech Community College. Voice teachers from area colleges will serve as judges.

Students sing in a preliminary round in the morning and semifinal round in the afternoon, competing in art song and musical theatre divisions. Finalists will perform at an honors recital at 4 p.m. in Christ Chapel, which is free and open to the public.

The event is being coordinated by Dr. Linell Gray Moss, voice instructor at Northwestern, and Glee Crippin of Buena Vista’s music faculty.

Northwestern singers who will compete include Nick Crippin, Storm Lake, Iowa; Jessica Decker, Rosemount, Minn.; Nicole Doorenbos, Boyden, Iowa; Sarah Fisher, Aplington, Iowa; Samantha Schouweiler, Rosemount, Minn.; and Andrew Stam, Oskaloosa, Iowa. Last year Fisher was a semifinalist and Northwestern’s Renee Ausborn, Lytton, Iowa, was a finalist.
