Choir to tour

The A cappella Choir of Northwestern College will tour in South Dakota March 26–29, performing in the communities of Huron, Platte, Rapid City and Mitchell. Visit www.nwciowa.edu/choirtour for concert times and details.

The choir’s three-part touring concert will begin with songs focusing on the progression of the human heart from cold to submission and finally worship at the foot of the cross. Next the ensemble will perform folk and virtuosic selections, and the concert will close with spirituals.

The first part of the concert will include dramatizations of portions of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress and choral arrangements of the hymns Softly and Tenderly and When I Survey.

Part two features several onomatopoeic pieces, when choir members will use their voices as instruments, including Pokpok Alimpako, about a children’s game, and Naiman Sharag, which includes the sound of horses.

The third part of the concert includes Ezekiel Saw the Wheel, Daniel in the Lion Den and the choir’s traditional Beautiful Savior.

Nine of the choir’s 70 vocalists are from the Mount Rushmore State. Northwestern’s A cappella Choir is directed by Dr. Thomas Holm, associate professor of music at the college and conductor of the Sioux County Oratorio Chorus. The A cappella Choir has performed across the United States and in Eastern Europe.

The A cappella Choir will perform its touring concert in Northwestern’s Christ Chapel on Friday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m.
