Spanish professors speak at conference

Dr. Diana Gonzalez and Piet Koene, members of the Spanish faculty at Northwestern College, presented papers at the North American Christian Foreign Language Association conference March 29 to 31 at Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky.

Gonzalez spoke on “All Languages are Created Equal.”

Koene spoke on “Professional Court Interpretation and the Christian Professor.” He also served as program chair for the conference and began a two-year term as the association’s president.

Gonzalez joined Northwestern’s faculty last fall. She previously taught at Dordt College and universities in Peru, Mexico, Germany and Argentina. Her doctorate in linguistics is from the University of Göttingen in Germany.

Koene, who received the Northwestern Teaching Excellence Award in 2003 and the Iowa Professor of the Year Award in 2004, joined the faculty in 2000. A certified court interpreter for the state of Iowa, he earned a master’s degree in history with a concentration in Latin American studies from the University of Toronto.
