An organic chemist, Dr. Varpness graduated from Northwestern College in 2002 with majors in biology and chemistry and then began graduate studies at Montana State University. There he served as a graduate research assistant while working on a doctorate in bioinorganic/materials chemistry. After earning his Ph.D., he was a chemistry professor at Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., for 11 years prior to joining Northwestern's faculty. In addition to teaching at Northwestern, Dr. Varpness serves as a consultant for Cytotheryx, based in Rochester, Minnesota.
