NWC to host Family Weekend

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Northwestern College will host its Family Weekend Oct. 29-30, giving family members of students a chance to see campus and get a glimpse into their student’s life.

The festivities begin Friday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. with Northwestern’s selection round of NC/DC in Christ Chapel. NC/DC is a campus version of “American Idol” that pits the best singers from Northwestern against those from Dordt College. The top five performers will be chosen to represent Northwestern and will advance to the two-week singing battle with Dordt. Admission is free.

Activities on Saturday, Oct. 30, will include a brunch served on the campus green under the big white tent from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parents are invited to meet President Greg Christy and socialize with other parents. Eggs benedict, pancakes, Thai beef and chicken cacciatore will be served. The cost is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children ages 6-10, with children ages 5 and under eating free.

There will be a Red Raider football game versus Dakota Wesleyan at 1 p.m. in De Valois Stadium. At halftime, Northwestern’s Parents of the Year will be introduced. Adult admission is $6.

Residence halls will be open to guests from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday. An art exhibit will be available for viewing from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. in the Te Paske Gallery of the Korver Visual Arts Center. The exhibit will feature the art of Barry Nichols, who worked in San Francisco as a newspaper illustrator and who specializes in caricatures.

Two members of 88improv, a comedy team from Omaha, Neb., featuring Northwestern alumni, will present shows at 4 p.m. in the England Proscenium Theatre and at 9:30 p.m. in the Hub in the Rowenhorst Student Center. Admission is free.

An evening buffet will be served in the cafeteria from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The cost is $9.50 for adults and $4.75 for children ages 6-10, with children ages 5 and under eating free.

The Family Weekend Concert will be held in Christ Chapel at 7 p.m., featuring several of the music department’s performing ensembles, including the Symphonic Band, Chamber Orchestra and choirs. Admission is free.
