Newspaper illustrator to display art

Studies, sketches, paintings and caricatures by illustrator Barry Nichols will comprise an art exhibit on display in Northwestern College’s Te Paske Gallery Oct. 22 through Nov. 19. A public reception with the artist is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m.

Now retired and living in Orange City, Nichols spent his career as a news artist for papers that included the Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore.; the Fayetteville Observer-Times in Fayetteville, N.C.; the Lawrence Journal-World in Lawrence, Kan.; the East Valley Tribune in Mesa, Ariz.; and The Columbian in Vancouver, Wash.

In addition to creating original illustrations and producing maps, charts and informational graphics, Nichols specialized in drawing caricatures of well-known people. His work won several first-place awards for newspaper illustration in the Pacific Northwest Excellence in Journalism Competition of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Nichols studied art at California State University in Hayward. As a freelance artist, he also provided illustrations for Homestead Cards, Obie Media, Admark Pacific, the Creative Company, and the magazines Child Life and Cinefantastique.

The Te Paske Gallery is located in the Thea G. Korver Visual Arts Center, on Highway 10 at 214 8th Street SW in Orange City. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to midnight Sunday.
