Laurel Klaassen has decades of expertise in classroom instruction and school counseling, the latter in both group and individual settings. She has served as a school counselor for both the George-Little Rock and Sibley-Ocheyedan community school districts. She also taught family and consumer sciences for the Sanborn, Boyden-Hull, and Sibley-Ocheyedan school districts.

Klaassen attended Northwestern College for two years before earning a bachelor's degree in home economics from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa. She also earned a master's degree in school guidance and counseling K–12 from Morningside College.
