Northwestern to hold Justice Week

Northwestern College will hold a variety of events about biblical justice issues during Justice Week, beginning April 19.

Sponsored by the college’s student mission and justice and service coordinators, this year’s Justice Week will build upon the college’s current chapel theme, “Your Kingdom Come.”

The week will kick off with a Sunday night Praise and Worship service led by senior Kelsey Doornenbal, who will speak on her experience serving with Rahab’s Rope in India during her Summer of Service trip in 2013.

Monday morning at 10:05 a.m., Vicki Moore, the founder of Rahab’s Rope, will speak in the college’s chapel service. Moore founded the nonprofit in 2004 after learning about the number of women who are forced into prostitution in India. Named after the biblical account of the prostitute Rahab, the organization was founded to provide hope and opportunity to women and girls at risk for or victim of the commercial sex trade in India.

Tuesday morning’s chapel service will be led by the college’s student coordinators and will include songs, Bible passages and prayers about biblical justice. A hunger banquet is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 5:30.

John Paul Sundararajan of Audio Scriptures Ministries will speak during the college’s Wednesday morning chapel service at 10:05. A 2000 graduate of Northwestern, Sundararajan serves as the India-Asia director for Audio Scriptures Ministries, which produces and distributes recordings of the Bible in a variety of languages for cultures with no written language or low literacy rates.

A panel will be held on Wednesday night about prison justice.

Thursday evening, students will set up a cardboard village and sleep overnight on the lawn north of the learning commons. The event is aimed at introducing the realities of homelessness in America.

A prayer station will also be set up during the week in the Ramaker Center. Students are encouraged to use this space to reflect on what they’ve learned and to seek solace in prayer and understanding.
