Professor contributes to Batman philosophy book

Dr. Randy Jensen, associate professor of philosophy at Northwestern College, is the author of a chapter in Batman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul, a new volume in the Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture series published by Wiley-Blackwell.
The book was released in June, shortly ahead of the premiere of Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated film The Dark Knight.
Jensen’s chapter, “Batman’s Promise,” investigates the nature and foundations of promises—especially the puzzling case of promises made to the deceased—by exploring how a young Bruce Wayne’s promise to his murdered parents figures in the Batman origin myth.
Jensen has also contributed chapters to 24 and Philosophy, Battlestar Galactica and Philosophy, The Office and Philosophy, and Johnny Cash and Philosophy. A chapter in What Philosophy Can Tell You About Your Cat is due to be published this fall.
A member of Northwestern’s faculty since 1999, Jensen earned a doctorate in philosophy from UCLA. He received a master’s degree in philosophy and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from California State University, Long Beach.
