Northwestern College will host a duo recital featuring violinist Dr. Ting-Lan Chen and pianist Dr. Nathan Buckner on Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public. Chen has performed numerous solos and recitals and was the principal second violin of the Sorg Opera Company. Winner of the 1991 National Chamber Music Competition in Taiwan, she has performed on Wisconsin Public Radio and appeared in the Young Musician Concerts at the White House and United Nations.
Currently an assistant professor of music at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Chen earned her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in violin and chamber music performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. A well-traveled musician, Chen has performed in Amsterdam, Leipzig, Berlin, Lisbon, Vienna, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Hollywood and Boston.
Buckner, a soloist and chamber musician, has performed in the United States, Europe and Asia. A national finalist in the 2006 Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Piano Competition, he has presented solo recitals at Alice Tully Hall as well as the Kennedy Center and chamber concerts with the DaCapo Chamber Players and Washington’s Contemporary Music Forum.
Buckner earned a bachelor’s degree from the Juilliard School, a Master of Music degree from Indiana University and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Maryland. He is an associate professor of music at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The recital will consist of four duets. Chen and Buckner will play Sonata No. 3 in D minor for Violin and Piano by Johannes Brahms, Bohuslav Martinu’s Five Madrigal Stanzas, Erik Satie’s Things Read From Right to Left Without Glasses and Claude Debussy's Sonata for Violin and Piano.
