Student journalists earn awards

Northwestern College students Jacob Christiansen, a sophomore theatre major from Omaha, Neb., and Lyric Morris, a senior art/graphic design major from Oskaloosa, Iowa, were honored for their review writing talents at the Iowa College Media Association’s student newspaper competition. Their stories, originally written for Northwestern’s student newspaper, the Beacon, were scored against submissions made by student journalists from colleges and universities throughout Iowa.

Christiansen won first place in the Best Review category for his review of the movie “Captain Phillips.” His piece can be read at beacon.nwciowa.edu/index.php/archives/10650.

Morris took second in the same category for her opinion on Son Lux’s album “Lanterns.” Her review can be read at beacon.nwciowa.edu/index.php/archives/10928.

Their accomplishments mark the third win for Northwestern in the Best Review category in consecutive years. Last year, 2013 graduate Tom Westerholm took third place for his review on Muse’s album “The 2nd Law.”
