Board approves plans for suite-style residence hall

The three-floor building will house 68 students in a total of 17 suites and will include a basement. The 23,487-square foot facility features rooms arranged in suites, with a bathroom in each suite. The residence hall will include many commons areas.

“This will be a great addition to our nationally recognized residence life program, joining traditional residence halls and apartments,” said President Greg Christy. “We are pleased to be able to provide this new housing option for our students. The goal for this hall is the same as for our other residence facilities, that they be places where our students grow in living and learning in community.”

Construction will begin in May. The hall is expected to be completed in early 2011 and ready for occupancy for the fall 2011 semester. The facility will provide needed housing for male students following the closing of Heemstra Hall after this school year.

The new hall has been designed by Cannon Moss Brygger and Associates of Sioux City. General contractor will be Hoogendoorn Construction of Canton, S.D.

Christy said there was a positive spirit at the board meeting. “The trustees feel good about the direction of the college. They see many encouraging things happening in academics and outside of the classroom. There is a sense of pride in the institution, strong commitment to our mission, and optimism for the future.”

The board recognized the service of two retiring members: the Rev. Mark Heijerman of rural Rock Valley, who served four years, and the Rev. Van Rathbun of Sioux Center, who served eight years.
