Band to tour April 16-18

Their touring concert opens with Variations on a Shaker Theme from composer Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. The next piece, Concertino for Flute and Wind Ensemble, features flutist Katie Hielkema, a junior music major from Gahanna, Ohio.

Amazing Grace is followed by Dance of the New World, which celebrates the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ historic voyage and expresses the awe of discovering an uncharted land. After the Jewish-inspired Wedding Dance, the band will play Paris Sketches.

The concert concludes with Awayday. Described as “Gershwin, Bernstein, Stravinsky and James Bond traveling together at 90 miles an hour,” the Adam Gorb composition was inspired by the heyday of American musical comedy.

The 58-member Symphonic Band has performed across the U.S. and in Central and South America. The band is conducted by Dr. Timothy McGarvey, professor of music at the college.

The band will perform its home concert in Northwestern’s Christ Chapel on Friday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m.
