James postpones campus visit

Earl James' planned visit to Northwestern College Feb. 8-10 has been postponed due to illness. The coordinator of multiracial initiatives and social justice for the Reformed Church in America will come to campus at a later date.

The discussion of the Belhar Confession that James was going to host on Monday evening, Feb. 8, will take place as scheduled. Dr. Kevin McMahan, Northwestern's associate dean for intercultural affairs, and Dr. Mitch Kinsinger, associate professor of religion, will serve as facilitators for the event, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the DeWitt Music Hall Choir Room.

Belhar is a confession of the Christian church in South Africa written out of the struggle against apartheid in the 1980s. The 2009 RCA General Synod voted to adopt the Belhar Confession as a standard of unity. The decision needs to be approved by two-thirds of the RCA’s 46 classes, which will report their votes to the 2010 General Synod in Orange City in June. More information about Belhar is at www.rca.org/Page.aspx?pid=2552.
