Author to be featured at reading series

Fiction writer David McGlynn will visit Northwestern College to read from his works and discuss the writing process Monday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. in Te Paske Gallery of the Korver Visual Arts Center. McGlynn comes to campus as part of the Deep Song Reading Series. The event is free and open to the public.

McGlynn’s collection of short stories, The End of the Straight and Narrow, examines the lives of the zealous and how religious faith is a compass for navigating daily life as well as the force that makes ordinary life impossible. Faced with disaster, the characters in his stories question whether faith illuminates the world or leaves them isolated within it.

The Dallas Morning News commented, “David McGlynn’s debut collection of well-crafted short stories stays in the mind longer than most books . . . he writes patiently and well about real people suddenly facing ultimate issues.”

 McGlynn’s works of fiction and nonfiction have also appeared in various literary journals such as Alaska Quarterly Review, Image, Mid-American Review and Shenandoah.

McGlynn, a graduate of the University of California, Irvine, earned a Master of Fine Arts degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah. He was also the managing editor of Western Humanities Review. McGlynn now teaches at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.

The Deep Song Reading Series will also feature poet Todd Boss on Nov. 16; members of Northwestern’s English faculty on Feb. 15; and novelist Kali VanBaale on April 19.
