Symphonic Band to perform

The Northwestern College Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Timothy McGarvey, will present a concert on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The public is invited to attend.

“The concert will feature a great combination of elements in band literature, from traditional to new material, offering an incredible variety,” says McGarvey.

The concert will open with the band’s performance of Early Light by Carolyn Bremer. Based on The Star Spangled Banner, the piece reflects the composer’s happy anticipation for hearing the anthem played before baseball games. Next, the band will play William Schuman’s When Jesus Wept, which communicates the empathy and compassion of Christ for those mourning over Lazarus’ death.

Second Suite in F by Gustav Holst consists of four movements, each featuring different English folk tunes. The band’s fourth piece, Mambo Furioso by Brant Karrick, reflects the excitement and spirit of Latin jazz and percussion artist Tito Puente. The band’s next piece, The Kiss by Michael Torke, creates an ever unfolding and increasing feeling, which culminates at the end of the piece.

Niagara Falls, a piece by Michael Daugherty, will close the concert. The contemporary piece conveys the pop culture and tourism of the Niagara Falls area.
