Children's stories, poems and songs on stage

Classic and contemporary children’s stories, poems and songs will be presented as family theatre in The Impossibles, on stage at Northwestern College Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Allen Black Box Theatre of the DeWitt Theatre Arts Center.
The cast of six will also present the show to audiences of schoolchildren every Tuesday and Thursday from Oct. 4 through Nov. 8. Adapted and directed by Northwestern theatre professor Karen Bohm Barker, The Impossibles opens with Invitation, a poem by Shel Silverstein. More poems by Silverstein, Maya Angelou and Robert Louis Stevenson are interspersed with familiar stories like Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and Dr. Seuss’ Gerald McBoing Boing. The one-hour production also includes tales based on historic people and events. The Story of Ruby Bridges is about one of the four black girls selected to attend white schools in 1960, and Diego tells the story of famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. Tickets for The Impossibles are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. The DeWitt Theatre box office opens Sept. 24 for Theatre Patrons; it is open Sept. 25 to Oct. 6 for the general public.
