Bailey Van Ginkel ’18 Admissions Counselor
Sioux Rapids, Iowa
Sioux Central High School; Northwestern College, bachelor’s degree in special needs studies (student-initiated major)
I am married to my high school sweetheart, Samuel Van Ginkel, and we have one fur-child together: Oliver the golden retriever. I’m also blessed to consider many of my friends to be family!
Probably the hardest question you could ask me. I love food! My favorite restaurant is most likely a tie between any Chinese restaurant or any place that serves steak or prime rib. Also, does Dairy Queen count?
Best book I’ve read
In college, I read Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God’s Work, by Timothy Keller. It was required reading for my Senior Seminar, and it really tied together everything we learned at Northwestern about using our talents, passions and knowledge to glorify God and help others.
I can pray in Norwegian and have an intense dislike of cotton balls.
Best spot on Northwestern’s campus
When I went to NWC, my favorite spot on campus was probably my dorm room. I had the best roommate, a cool wing, and loved how it was my cozy, little place of calm on a busy campus during a busy time of life!
My advice to incoming students
Don’t let our American society and culture convince you that you have to go far away from home or to a big city with a big college to “find yourself.” Home is where “your people” are, and Christ is with you no matter where you choose to go. Also, don’t give in to the constant pressure to pick a major if you don’t know how God is calling you to serve him and his Kingdom. Take your time to experience new things, find your passions, and pray for wisdom to know your calling when God presents it to you!
