Start here. Go anywhere.
Heath spent a semester in Egypt as part of the Middle East Studies Program offered through the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities. While in Cairo, he took Arabic language classes, learned about Islamic thought and practice, and studied the peoples, culture and conflicts of the Middle East. He also met with students at a leading Muslim university, traveled to Israel, and played on the sand hills of a desert oasis. A former resident in Northwestern’s Mission House, Heath spent two summers teaching English in Taiwan. After graduation, he plans to teach in the United States for a few years before returning to Taiwan to teach children and spread the gospel.
Good advice
“A friend who has been very influential in my life encouraged me to consider studying abroad. My plan had been to graduate in three years (I took a lot of courses for college credit in high school), but after looking at the different study abroad opportunities, I decided this was something I didn’t want to pass up.”
Beyond the classroom
“When considering where I should study abroad, the Middle East really stood out to me as a place I would probably never go otherwise. I also looked at Uganda and China, but the thought of learning more about Islam and interacting with Muslims on a personal level really intrigued me.”
World wise
“My study abroad experience will definitely benefit my future career as a teacher. Even though the program focused primarily on politics and religion, with my increased understanding of the region and the issues involved there, I will be able to relate it to my students in meaningful ways. Also, while I was in Egypt I taught English at a school for African refugees, which increased my passion to care for children of every nation.”
Indispensable
“On paper, this study abroad program was completely unnecessary, but it was perhaps the most important part of my education. I changed in more ways than I can count while simultaneously becoming more convinced of the truth of the Bible and the reality of Jesus Christ and his love. I am so glad I decided to go.”
